The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

Jesus's explanation to Nicodemus about the Holy Spirit includes this fascinating verse where Christ is comparing the way of the Spirit with the wind.

A wind has some peculariaties as mentioned by Jesus Himself:

  • it blows in whatever direction (it wishes)

  • you cant see it, but you can feel its effect.

Other characteristics of the wind includes:

  • it can be abrupt

  • it can be powerful

  • and it rarely travels in a straight line.

There are plenty of parallels where people's experiences with the Holy Spirit is comparable to the qualities of the wind. think about the following stories:

  • Jesus being led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Matt 4:1)

  • Philip being carried away by the Spirit as soon as he preachs the gospel to the Ethiopian ruler (Acts 8:39)

  • Mary being concieved with the Son of God through the power of the Spirit (Luke 1:35)

  • Paul the apostle forbidden to preach the gospel in Asia through the prompting of the Spirit (Acts 16:6)

As you can see, very real and practical examples of people experiencing divine interruptions through the leading of the Holy Spirit. I have had many similar experiences, where suddenly out of the blue, I get inspired to do something, or I hear something from the Lord that I am prompted to do. I've learnt and continue to learn that God does not need to move in the exact same way every time He deals with us. Dont ask me why - it's a mystery. I dont need to know why either.

Here's the message. If you want to be led by the Spirit - be open to it! I have seen beautiful church services being conducted with precise timings and tempos and everything, yet so much is missed out because there is no 'being led by the Spirit'. If we try to fit God' ways into our ways and expect Him to move in a certain way - then we are not really going to experience much. In the super natural at least. Do you want healings and breakthroughs happen in the church? Do you want to see people liberated from demonic oppression? Do you want to see God's power manifest in real time? Then, you have to be willing to let go of strict program schedules, and be flexible to whatever God wants to do.

Sometimes the leading or the direction of the Spirit will not make much sense. Our job is not to ask why. Our duty is to simply follow instructions. If God says "go there", we "go there". If God prompts us to speaking something, then we speak something. If God warns us not to go somewhere, we do exactly that - not go there. It can be scary. It can be very unsettling. But in the end, it is a BEST CASE SCENARIO. Because God's ways are far better than ours. I have had so many experiences when I simply speak what comes to my mind when praying for someone, and end up realising that it wasnt my own thoughts, but God's thoughts for them. All praise to God for allowing me to be His mouthpiece. I love being led by the Spirit.

So go ahead, give it a shot. Tell God you are open for anything. Ask God to use you anyhere. And see how the Holy Spirit will start working in mysterious yet beautiful ways to accomplish all that He has for you. Just like you cant see the wind but feel it, you will experience God's power when you allow Him to move in you and through you.
